Political leaders pursuing deep reforms often need time to fully implement their plans. These opportunities are not always provided within the framework of the country’s Constitution, so the basic law is changed during a popular referendum. One of the leaders who carried out this procedure is the current Uzbek president .
Process Features
According to the requirements of the law, you can serve as the President of Uzbekistan for five years and be elected to this post twice. Shavkat Mirziyoyev became head of state in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021. He had several years left before the expiration of his powers, but many reforms were not completed.
To get a mandate from voters to continue the course, the politician decided to enlist popular support and made changes to the Constitution. According to these criteria, the term of office of the country’s leader is increased to seven years. Thanks to changes in the law, the old terms were reset, and Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the right to run for office two more times.
He did not complete the years that were due to him after the previous elections, appointed an early campaign, and won it with an overwhelming advantage.
The need for a new mandate
Reform in Uzbekistan affects all spheres of life. They are radical in nature. In particular, all prosecutorial employees were fired, and new people came in their place, untainted by corruption. This work also affected other law enforcement agencies.
They banned forced labor of children, removed bureaucratic barriers for producers of cotton and fruits and vegetables, which improved the situation in the country’s agriculture. The industry has set a course for privatization. Non-strategic enterprises are sold to private investors through the stock exchange. In strategic ones, the state’s share is reduced, and foreign capital is attracted to management.
These fundamental changes require mass support from all segments of the population, which was determined during the elections. Having received more than 88% of the vote, the president can carry out reforms, knowing that the people approve of his actions.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev pays great attention to the social and economic situation of the poorest segments of the population, trying to raise the standard of living in the country, bringing it closer to the most advanced countries in this indicator.
The position of Uzbekistan in the region and good neighborly relations with other states are considered an important area. Another area where deep reforms are required is the state of water resources and solving environmental problems. To carry them out, Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the time and necessary powers.
